SHAKE it, baby.

Today my heart is still filled with love. It has nothing to do with the fact that it happens to be Valentine’s Day. That is just an unfortunate coincidence, if you ask me.

Last week we brought you the first installment in our blog series “Rum thing we love”, showing some love to our favourite rum brands.

Because we feel so strongly that you should be able to enjoy our rum without a mixer and that quality rum should be so smooth that you don’t need anything else, we think it is basically only an artist of magician of sorts that can conceptualise a drink without overpowering or compromising the unique flavours of the particular rum. Similarly challenging is understanding the delicate chemistry between different components of a drink and what to pair a spirit with to make it shine at its best.

For this reason, today, we tip our hats to a few mixologists we think do cool stuff. We start with two guys we have dealt with personally, and subsequently have massive respect for:
Lionel “Mixdog” Crerar

Here we are not objective, of course but, due to our personal ties with him, we have to start with Lionel “Mixdog” Crerar, who developed our entire cocktail menu.
Julian Short
Team member
Julian Short at Sin + Tax Bar in Rosebank, Johannesburg, who was the 2017 World Class South African bartender of the year. Simply because he still is at the forefront of mixology in South Africa now, if you ask us. Sin + Tax was the only African bar to make the list at the 2019 World's 50 Best Bar Awards last year.
We also love:
Dale Degroff
Team member
How can we not be a fan of a good drink making history? For this reason, we are a fan of Dale Degroff, Founding president of the Museum of the American Cocktail in New Orleans. Dale, probably better known as “King Cocktail,” also wrote two cocktail books and won two James Beard awards, one of which a lifetime achievement award.

With schools in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and London, world domination seems within their reach. This quote on their blog says it all: “The bartender is one of the most dignified, law abiding, and ascetic of men. He is guided be a rigid code of professional ethics; his work demands a clear head and a steady hand”. We could not agree more.
Andy Kiloh
Team member
Andy Kiloh - a leading South African rum fanatic and ambassador. If you're looking for a bit of help with your cocktail skills, he's the man you'd want to be speaking to.

So, there you go. People we think treat rum right. If they inspired you to try your hand at mixing a few, go for it, but always remember – show some respect.
